For years I have loved the sounds of the wonderful Christmas song Baby It's Cold Outside every December. Unfortunately each time I heard it, the lyrics made me super upset. As a women (and usually when I'm blonde... but more on that thought later.) I have been patted on the head and told my thoughts and my feelings did not matter as much as the person talking to me. I have to say the recent tipping point of men actually being held accountable for being predators who use these tactics and these words to manipulate us women into thinking we are less than, and the society that took away our opportunities and lives if we didn't comply, is long overdue.
It would be simply easy to stop listening and stop playing this song. But damn is the melody good, the melancholy romance inherent, and the hook catchy! (Cause baby, it is cold outside her in West Michigan!) It just needed a few tweaks to bring it up to speed - as well as modernize some of the more antiquated references.
So while making my annual traditional Chex Mix,, I grabbed a paper and pen and rewrote the lyrics to fit our modern world. (And yes, most of it is the pressures of holiday expectations. So maybe the next rewrite in ten years will be more about enjoying the holiday and less about stress? Fingers crossed.)
*** I do not trust my musicality to match up with the magic this song requires, so I am putting out a call for those musicians/ singers who want to record it and share - feel free! ***

Baby, It's Cold Outside
- With Lyrical Changes for a Modern World
I really can't stay. (But baby, it's cold outside.)
I've got to go away. (But baby, it's cold outside.)
This evening has been (Been hoping that you'd drop in.)
So very nice. (I’ll hold your hands, they're just like ice.)
The sales are only good through Thursday. (Beautiful what's your hurry?)
I’ve got to get just one present more. (Listen to the fireplace roar.)
So really I'd better scurry. (Beautiful please don't hurry.)
But maybe just a half a drink more. (Put some Kayne on while I pour.)
The neighbors might think. (Baby, it's bad out there.)
My lights they don’t blink. (Ubers won’t drive out there.)
I wish I knew how (Your eyes are like starlight now.)
To break this spell. (I’ll take your hat, your hair looks belle.)
I ought to just go, go, go sir. (Mind if I move in closer?)
From my followers I cannot hide. (You can put your phone on vibe.)
I really can't stay. (Oh baby don't go out.)
But baby, it's cold outside.
I simply must go. (But baby, it's cold outside.)
I’m late for the show. (But baby, it's cold outside.)
Your welcome has been. (How lucky that you dropped in.)
So nice and warm (Look out the window at this storm.)
My sister will be suspicious. (She’s busy watching Netflix.)
My dog will be there at the door. (Waves upon a tropical shore)
My maiden aunt’s mind is vicious. (That’s just cause she’s pernicious)
But maybe just one glass more. (Never such a blizzard before)
I've gotta get home. (But baby, you'd freeze out there.)
Say lend me your Uggs. (It's up to your knees out there.)
You've really been grand. (I fear when I touch your hand.)
But don't you see? (I can, you mean so much to me.)
There's bound to be talk on Monday. (You can pretend it’s Sunday.)
At least there will be plenty implied. (If you got pneumonia and died)
I really can't stay. (Get over that guilt trip.)
Baby, it's cold
Baby, it's cold outside.
